County Commissioners approve updates to solicitation and public property ordinances

Iredell County Board of Commissioners approved unanimously at their Tuesday meeting to amend two chapters in the Code of Ordinances — Article IV, Chapter 7.5 related to soliciting at private homes and Chapter 10.5 concerning issues related to parking on County property. The ordinances will be effective starting March 1, 2025.

The solicitation ordinance, previously focused on panhandling, now includes itinerant merchants, salespeople, and promoters. Solicitation is restricted from dusk to 10 a.m. on Monday through Saturday and all day on Sunday. Nonprofits, including schools, churches, and charities, are exempt but must still follow time restrictions.

Other additions include:

· Solicitors must obtain a permit before operating within the County. Failure to do so could result in penalties.

· Before pursuing legal action, the Sherriff’s Office may require the complainant to submit a sworn statement and cooperate in court.

· Violators may face a Class 3 misdemeanor and fines up to $500.

The Public Property Ordinance amendment prohibits overnight parking or unauthorized parking during business hours in County-owned lots. Vehicles parked in violation may be towed at the owner’s expense.

businesses,” shared County Manager Beth Milton. “Additionally, the parking amendment helps keep County properties accessible and properly maintained. These changes reflect our commitment to maintaining a well-organized and welcoming community for all.”
